About The City Sukkah

Coming up, in the month of September, is the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Sukkot is a week long holiday that comes five days after the Jewish high holidays. Sukkot celebrates the gathering of the harvest and commemorates the miraculous protection G‑d provided for the children of Israel when they left Egypt. We celebrate Sukkot by eating in a foliage-covered booth (known as a sukkah). The Sukkah is made of four walls (usually made of wooden panels), and tree branches make up the roof, so that when sitting in the Sukkah one is directly beneath the heaven.

Thanks to the Times Group Co. who graciously gave us a great space at the busy corner of Yonge and Davisville, Chabad on the East Side has constructed a community Sukkah for the public to benefit from. The Sukkah will give the many passers-by the opportunity to make a blessing on the Lulov and Etrog and have a bite in the Sukkah. This will also benefit the nearby condo dwellers, who may not have a Sukkha of their own.

We were privileged to have city renowned artists Ian Leventhal, Jessica Gorlicky, Matt Pine, Miguel Chavez, Elizaveta Zhukovskaya, Emanuel Ciobanica and Nicole Neagu, paint beautiful Jewish art on the sukkah walls, bringing the holiday spirit to the streets.
